Virtuemart - Categories & Products with SEO

Setting up categories and products in Virtuemart 2 with meta descriptions and title tags

Login to your Joomla website

1. under components
2. virtuemart
3. your store will load

Add a New Category

1. Click on Products
2. Product Categories
3. You'll see a list of your current categories
4. Click New

Category Details

1. Category Name (this will appear in your product menu on the front end)
2. Published to YES
3. SEF url - this will auto generate
4. A Description for your customers - styled using h1 h2 tags etc
5. Either leave as a top level category or choose the category this is to be a sub category of
6. Page Title (This will appear in the viewers browser and is important to Google)
7. Meta Keywords (Google no longer uses these, but some search engines do)
8. Meta Description (Unseen by the public, but used by Google for understanding your page)
9. Click on the images tab

Category Image

1. Use the browse button to find the image on your computer
2. Click Save to upload the image and save the other category information

Adding a Product

1. Under Products
2. Click Products
3. A list of Current products will appear
4. Click New

The Product Information

1. Check the Published box
2. Add your product code
3. Add the product Name
4. Product alias will auto fill from the product name at the time of saving
5. Choose the category the product belongs to
6. Click Product Description tab

Product Description

1. Fill in the short description
2. Add the full product description (use h1 h2 and p tags to style)
3. Page Title (This will appear in the viewers browser and is important to Google)
4. Meta Keywords (Google no longer uses these, but some search engines do)
5. Meta Description (Unseen by the public, but used by Google for understanding your page)
6. Click on the images tab

Product Images

1. Use the browse button to find the image on your computer
2. Click Save to upload the image and save the other category information
